Lord, Make Me A Fool

October 11th, 2009

Matthew 14:28

“Then Peter called to Him, “Lord if it’s really You, tell me to come to You by walking on water”

The practice of walking on water is not an ordinary routine. In fact, we can all probably agree that the short-lived art of walking on water is obsolete and no longer applicable to our fast paced lifestyle, to attempt or even consider such an act, would be looked on as a simple joke and even foolish.

Lord, make me a fool.

A life forever lived in careful and “rational” choice will be one that never fully perceives the reality of the power of God in it. Our God is not a God of timid steps forward but one that calls a shepherd boy to challenge a man four times his size with a simple stone. A God that moves an exile to stand before Pharaoh and demand; let His people go. A God that calls a young fisherman, defying all known laws of physics, to walk out unto a raging sea.

Jesus does not call the rational thinkers to come and consider a “proposal” made on a cross. Rather, He calls anyone that would follow and have faith in a King that humbled Himself, and chose to be a servant that all might live. The gospel of Christ will never “fit in”. It will never fall in line with the status-quo, nor should we. The choices we make for our Lord should reflect those that he made for us: unconditional, without hesitation, with no regard of self, seeking only to love.

Has your life, choices, and faith reflected that of reckless abandonment to Him who has given you so much? What can we do today to show that we chosen to follow Jesus tomorrow regardless of the cost?

Lord make me a fool for you.

    Good devo Todd!
I just heard a sunday school lesson in which my dad (the teacher) said that a fellow named Steven Olford (sp?) told the Lord when he was on his death bed (which was while he was in college) "Anytime, Any place, Any price." May the Lord make each of us a "fool" for him, regardless of the time, place, or price.
