“X” Marks the Spot

April 5th, 2008

Matthew 6:19

Do not lay up for yourselves treasures upon earth, where moth and rust destroy, and where thieves break in and steal.

My wife and I aren’t rich by our neighbor’s standards. Last April we got into an upscale apartment complex on an extremely generous deal. Most of our neighbors are leasing their apartments on a monthly basis while they wait for their million dollar homes to be completed down the street. It’s easy for us to read verses like Matthew 6:19 with a sense of pride. We don’t have a fancy house, nice cars, or the money to actually buy something when we go to the mall. On the other hand, however, we do at least get to go to the mall.

This fact places Matthew 6:19 in a completely different light. Our treasure is not based on what our neighbor’s wealth may add up to, but on what our hearts holds dear. If Kristie and I consider a value meal at the local fast food joint more important than giving at church or helping a friend in need, we are in direct defiance to Jesus’ command. Heaven seems so far away, and to be honest, it’s not often that I remember Christ will judge me for how I spend the money He gives me.

How often do you think about Christ when you spend your money? Would He be happy to see how you’re using the resources He’s give you? It’s a humbling fact the day we realize that Christ does know where every penny of our money is spent. Are your resources going to further the heavenly kingdom, or one of your own here on earth?

But lay up for yourselves treasures in heaven, where neither moth nor rust destroys, and where thieves do not break in our steal; for where your treasure is, there will your heart be also
(Matthew 6:20, 21).
