Exodus 20:14
You shall not commit adultery.
Adultery, in its simplest form, is having sexual relations with another person’s husband or wife. As we study the Word of God more deeply it becomes apparent that this commandment is speaking to much more than just sleeping with another person’s spouse. Biblically, all sexual relations outside of marriage fall under the heading of adultery. Jesus says, “You have heard it said, ‘You shall not commit adultery’ but I say to you that anyone who looks upon a woman with lust for her has already committed adultery in his heart” (Matthew 5:27-28). God’s law is not restricted to a legalistic definition of the five words “you shall not commit adultery”. It is a reflection of His character; anyone who even thinks a lustful thought about another person has sinned against God and the seventh commandment of His law.
As a child of God, you must remember that culture has long since disregarded God’s standard for sexual purity. In light of this, it is important that you set scriptural boundaries to any friendships you may one day have with members of the opposite sex. As always though, these boundaries do not depend on one’s definitions of adultery or lust, but on the respect you give to the Bible and how important you believe it is to remain obedient God’s Word. This will never yield any room for questions such as “How far can I go?”
