Job 1:20
“Then Job arose…and worshipped.”
In the middle of losing everything in his life, Job worshiped God. His worship testifies that he loved God more than even his most prized possessions. He knew that all things belonged to God and so he loved God more than anything or anyone. Such incredible love is what puzzles the devil and the world as a whole.
When I came to Christ it was based on this idea. Before my wife and I were married I asked her a question; “Do you love God more than me?” She responded “Yes.” Based on that answer I began to read the Bible and pray for about three months. By the end of those months, I found myself learning to love God in much the same way.
In like manner Job’s wife remained by his side throughout his entire tragedy, but not because she loved God more than her husband. On the contrary, she remained by his side because something in her husband loved God more than her. Love like this is truly puzzling to many.
Does your love for God exceed your love for friends, family, or the things you own? If not, perhaps it is because you do not realize the depth to which God loves you. God loves the world in this way: He gave His only Son so that whoever believes in Him will not perish but will have eternal life.
So what can we conclude from this truth? We conclude that the love of God always precedes a love for God. Love therefore, if it really is love, comes only from God. It is with this love that Job loved his wife, a love that puzzles the devil and the world.
