Ecclesiastes 1:13
And I set my mind to seek and explore by wisdom concerning all that has been done under heaven. It is a grievous task which God has given to the sons of men to be afflicted with.
There are aspects of every believer’s faith that he or she simply cannot comprehend. As you mature in your faith, the number of these seemingly unanswerable questions will only continue to grow in their size. Different mysteries will afflict different individuals:
“How do I recognize true love?”
“Why would a good God allow anyone to spend eternity in hell?”
“Where can I find true happiness?”
Affliction is never fun. It hurts. It often leaves you tired, broken, and without the desire to search any longer for your answers. But you must. The longer that you persevere in your search for the truth, the closer you will come to experiencing the glory of your God. Solomon, the wisest man to ever walk the earth, found only meaningless answers to his lifelong questions. One answer after another, he continued to diligently seek and explore “all that had been done under heaven.” In the end, he counted it all worthless, but he was found faithful in the task God had given him.
God has charged you with same task. It is your duty to “set your mind” on those difficult lifelong questions. He delights in knowing that any affliction you receive during your search will only lead you closer to Him. Do not ignore the difficult questions that afflict your innermost being today. Take joy in knowing that this is your duty and it is leading you closer to Jesus.
