Isaiah 54:10
“For the mountains may be removed and the hills may shake, but My lovingkindness will not be removed from you, and My covenant of peace will not be shaken,” says the Lord who has compassion on you.
Love’s greatest pain is the conditionality we’ve grown to expect but hate to admit. Some promises are destined for failure before they’re ever uttered. Most of them involve fluttery hearts, wide-eye grins, and misconstrued definitions of love.
You know exactly what I’m talking about too. He loved you until… she promised this… but it turned out like that… Why does it hurt so much when we knew it was too good to be true? Why do we hope that one day, just maybe, the promise will be true and the love unconditional? What makes us believe we should get back up and try again?
Your desire for unconditional love is not that different from those who walked the hills of Jerusalem during the day of Isaiah. Zion was the name given to God’s holy people. They were a nation set apart for Him and by Him. They were a nation in love with everything around them. And yet, as deeply as they fell into sin, and as many times as they returned to their watered down versions of love, God was faithful in His promise to them. All else could fail them, all else would fail them, but the compassion of the Almighty never left them.
Has your desire for unconditional love taken you away from the Father? Have you, trying so hard to find on your own what the Lord has already promised, been running from the only one who can provide what you need?
