Psalm 139:4
Even before there is a word on my tongue, behold, O Lord, You know it all.
To think that God knows everything I am going to say before I say it can be a very discouraging thought, considering how many times I say things that dishonor Him. Even further than the fact that He knows every word, is the deeper meaning that He knows the condition of my heart, which is the platform for every word I say.
In Matthew 12:34 Jesus rebukes the Pharisees because their words do not match up with their hearts. It is there that He tells them that “whatever is in your heart determines what you say.” This is true for us today as well. We can know that our hearts need the Father, when we worship Him in church and then later tell a crude joke. We know that our hearts are not where they should be when we lead a sincere prayer at dinner then spread gossip at the dinner table. And to think that the Lord knows it all… He knows the prayer is coming and then the gossip.
That’s what’s most amazing about this truth. He knows our words because He knows our hearts. And despite all that (which for most of us is just humiliating considering how hard it is to tame the tongue), His love is immense, constant, and unconditional. I am just amazed by that.
