Psalm 139:1-2
O Lord, You have searched me and You know me. You know when I sit and when I rise; You perceive my thoughts from afar.
I recently went with my wife to her bank’s annual Christmas party. I knew a few people there, but for the most part the room was filled with strangers. Each time I was introduced to a new person and I told them I was a youth minister, it was obvious by their faces that I didn’t measure up. I wanted desperately for someone to know me.
This passage reminds us that we have a God who knows us. He knows our thoughts and our actions; He knows our deepest desires and He knows our deepest fears. He knows us in a very intimate way. This passage is not about a God who knows what you do and what you think so that He can come back and fill you with guilt. Rather, it is about a God who cares so deeply for you that He will always desire to be a greater part of your life.
It is easy to think of God as being “out there,” a far-removed God who has bigger troubles and situations to deal with than the ones that fill our lives. Psalm 139 reminds us that God truly desires to be part of our lives.
