Genesis 28:15
Behold, I am with you and will keep you wherever you go, and will bring you back to this land; for I will not leave you until I have done what I have promised you.
Have you ever had a dream that seemed so real that when you woke up you were startled and disappointed to find “it was only a dream”? Jacob had such a dream and it is recorded for us in Genesis 28: 12-15.
Jacob was on a journey to find a wife. His plan was to bring her back to his homeland and live happily-ever-after. However, God’s plan was much broader than Jacob could ever have imagined, even in his wildest dreams. God’s plan was so great that He did in fact chose to reveal it to Jacob in a dream.
“…in you, and in your descendants shall all the families of the earth be blessed. And behold, I am with you, and will keep you wherever you go, and will bring you back to this land; for I will not leave you until I have done what I have promised you.”
The most obvious observation about Jacob’s dream is that its fruition was completely beyond Jacob’s ability or control. However, Jacob did not wake up disappointed and say, “It was only a dream.” Instead, he said, “Surely the Lord is in this place.” That’s because Jacob realized it was not even his dream…it was God’s dream!
Read the dream again and see what God was dreaming of doing through Jacob and then ask, “God, what are You dreaming of doing through me?” If He chooses to tell you, then you will know the purpose for your life. If He is not ready to tell you, yet, keep dreaming because God has big dreams for you!
One final thought…sometimes God doesn’t reveal his big dreams for us until He has already made His dream come true. It’s okay for Him to do that, because He is God.
