Grounded in Love

December 18th, 2009

Ephesians 3:19

And to know the love of Christ which surpasses knowledge, that you may be filled up to all the fullness of God.

How difficult it is to understand the love of Christ! I pray like Paul that you would be filled up to the fullness of God. I ask that the blessings and wisdom of Christ would be made known in your life. We have so many promises, yet we claim so few because we fail to comprehend the love of Christ in our lives.

Before you will ever fully understand the significance of Jesus Christ’s substitutional death on the cross for your sins, you must first understand what that death has provided. Eph. 3:15 reminds us that we are a part of God’s family. Our name has been added to the Lamb’s book of life. Jesus’ death on the cross paid for our adoption into His Father’s house. Since the day of your salvation you have been a member of His family and now find your life rooted firmly in His love.

This is the love of Christ; you have been grounded and rooted within it. Like a plant that grows forth out of the richness of its soil, so your life should bring forth the fruit of the His Spirit. The more time you spend within His word the greater your understanding of His love will become and the stronger your roots will be grounded. To understand the fullness of God and the love of Christ is to spend time digging through it and attempting to comprehend it. His love runs deeper and wider than any river imaginable to the human mind. His blessings and promises pile higher than the sky itself. It is in this love, that Paul says our lives have been grounded since the day of our salvation. How deep do your roots extend?

With each selfless minute I spend in the Scriptures, with each prayer I say, I enable my roots to grow down, deeper into the love of Christ. The more time I spend in His Word the deeper my understanding of His love develops and my life becomes all the more firmly grounded in Him. Do you find life’s problems and temptations too difficult to bear? Does it often seem like only one more tug until you are left uprooted for life? Do you ever wonder where the love of Christ has gone? I challenge you to look beneath you. Your entire being has been rooted within His love. It is of no fault of God if you don’t understand Him more today than you did yesterday.

I encourage you to delve deep into the mysteries of the love of Christ so that you “may be able to comprehend with all the saints what is the breadth and length and height and depth, and to know the love of Christ which surpasses knowledge, that you may be filled up to all the fullness of God”

(Eph. 3:18-19).
