Matthew 7:24, 26
Therefore everyone who hears these words of Mine, and acts upon them, may be compared to a wise man, who built his house upon the rock. And everyone who hears these words of Mine, and does not act upon them, will be like a foolish man, who built his house upon the sand.
Where do you stand today? What is your life built upon? Is it sturdy, or will it one day come down? Jesus compares those that listen to His words as individuals that build their house on rock. It is a wise person that does this. In fact, only a fool would set out to build their house on anything but rock. Can you imagine what would happen if your home was constructed on the beach? The first rainfall that came along would cause the sand to wash out from under you. Everything that you own, everything that you value, even your life itself, would be washed away with the sand. It doesn’t take a lot of common sense to understand why rock would be a better foundation to build your house upon.
While neither you nor I would consider building a house on sand, I am afraid that we all too often build our lives on a foundation just as weak. This is the simple truth that Jesus addresses in verses 24-27 of Matthew chapter 7. I challenge you to evaluate where you stand. Are you standing on the promises of a high paying career? What would happen if you got injured and possibly never worked again? Would your life then be meaningless? Are you standing on the top of a mountain called popularity? What will happen when high school or college is over and you must start again with new friends? Will your life be meaningless then? What do you build your life upon? What do you build your life around? Nothing but the love of God will be eternal. Nothing will withstand the rain but the promises of Jesus Christ. Nothing will give you hope but the Word of God.
This is true, the rain will come. There will be days, even week and years that feel like torrential downpours. Those that find themselves standing on the rock of Jesus Christ will find that no weapon formed against them will cause them to falter. Those standing on the Rock will have peace that passes all understanding and a wisdom that comes from God alone. Those however, that find themselves standing on the sand will be washed away with the rain. They will find little hope in their jobs, their friends, or anything else that they once found comforting. Which person will you be on that day? You can only know by evaluating what your life is built on today. I challenge you to spend time in the Word. Spend time in prayer and meditation with God. It is only by rooting yourself in the Word of God that you can be sure to be standing when all is said and done.
