This Is My God

September 21st, 2009

Psalm 48:14
For this God is our God for ever and ever; He will be our guide even to the end.

I often find myself making excuses for my beliefs and convictions, “Well, I just don’t agree with that…” or “That’s just not my thing…”, all the while belittling the power and authority of my God. Yes, I follow His instruction and will for my life because I know that He is my Father and has my best interests at heart, and yes, I follow the “disciplines” of the faith because I have seen the positive results they produce in the lives of others, but at the core of my obedience, is my fear of the holy and powerful Almighty God. I seek to serve the Lord with my life because I understand that I have been bought at a price. I don’t sin against the Lord because I know the wrath He is capable of and I respect the reverence He commands.

That is why this passage struck me. Psalm 48 describes Zion, the city God has prepared for us. Like in many other places in the Bible, the awesomeness of God is reiterated through descriptions of Him as a “stronghold” and explanations of the fate of those who rise against Him. However, what made this passage stand out was the last verse, “For this God is our God for ever and ever; He will be our guide even to the end.” What a powerful reality! The God who created the insurmountable mountain, the God who filled the abyss at the bottom of the ocean, the God who can not only explain where gravity comes from but created it, this is my God and He will be my God for ever and ever.

So what am I saying? I am saying that the conviction and purpose of my life is not because of my inherent wisdom or personal decision, it is because I know and serve the Holiest of Holies. I refuse to downplay God’s role in my life because He is the source of my life… the source of all life. This God is my God and He will be my guide even to the end. This is my declaration. This is my breath, my food, my drink. I live for the God of the universe and He will be my God until the end. Hallelujah!

Today, I challenge you to bring glory and praise to the almighty God. With boldness proclaim the work He is doing, and has done, in your life.
