Your First Love

August 10th, 2009

Revelation 2:4, 5
But I have this against you, that you have left your first love. Remember therefore from where you have fallen, and repent and do the deeds you did at first.

I said a prayer for you today. Life can be so difficult. We seldom have the time to do the things we desire to do. At some points in life, we barely manage to do that which we are obligated to do. I prayed that the Lord would speak to you today… more importantly I prayed that you would hear His voice. I prayed that in the mist of all your obligations you might find time to read this. It’s funny how priorities, stress and pain distract us from the Lord. In truth, these are the situations in which we could use Him the most.

Love is so overwhelming… true love is anyway. I love my wife. The more I do, the more I find myself wanting to spend time with her. New emotions are discovered on a daily basis. I often ask myself why I don’t experience these emotions with the Lord? At times I am afraid to admit that I lose sight of my love for Him. Here is the man who willingly died for my sins. He unconditionally loves me, yet I seem to go about my daily activities without any thought of Him. Today I prayed that you might rediscover this relationship with Christ. I asked the Lord that you would spend as much time thinking about Him, meditating on His word, and imitating His life as you do dreaming of that special someone. I prayed that you would once again return to your first love.

Before you can return to that love though, verse 5 say that first you must remember it. You cannot forget the feelings you once experienced. You must not allow your love for Christ to become a distant memory. I prayed that you would spend a couple minutes today reflecting on those first encounters you had with the Lord. Secondly you must repent. Our God is a faithful God. His love is unconditional. He promises to forgive us, yet there can be no forgiveness of sins where there is no repentance of them. We should remember that repentance is different from guilt. When I regret my sins, I simply say I am ashamed of them. When I repent of my sins, I am saying that I will completely turn away from them. If my sins are in front of me I must do a 180-degree turn. I must walk away. Lastly, the Lord says we must “do the deeds we did at first.” This is a key point to the restoration of that first love. This is why we must complete the fist step first. If it is your desire to love the Lord as you did when you first met Him, you must remember the relationship you had, repent of the life you have been living, and return to the ways of the Lord once again .

My prayers for you are sincere, but only you can allow Christ to change your life. Only you can remember, repent and return to the love and the fellowship you once had. I prayed that you would once again experience the “joy of His salvation.”

Restore to me the joy of Thy salvation, and sustain me with a willing spirit (Psalm 50:12).
