Exodus 20:4
You shall not make for yourself an idol, or any likeness of what is in heaven above or on the earth beneath or in the water under the earth.
Jesus makes it clear in Matthew 6:24 that “no one can serve two masters.” He tells us that anyone in this position will either “hate the one and love the other, or he will hold to one and despise the other.” It is this basic human characteristic that necessitates God’s command to us: “You shall not make for yourself any idols.” God is aware of your tendency to give your all to one thing. This is how He created you. And yet, it does not excuse us from His judgment. In fact, your worship of money, popularity, or any other manmade god will give you no choice but to hate your Creator (Exodus 20:5). This, in turn, will bring His wrath upon you.
James writes that “whoever whishes to make friends with the world makes himself and enemy of God” (4:4). There is a fine line between simply living in the world and being conformed to to the world (Romans 12:2). Only one thing can assuredly prevent you from crossing that threshold. As the apostle Paul so eloquently puts it, “Do not be conformed to this world, but be transformed by the renewing of the mind.” This “renewing of the mind” is our key to an unadulterated worship of the one true God. There is no room for other god’s at your Father’s throne.
What are you worshiping in the place of the Father? You must take a look around, identify these idols, and destroy them today. They are symbols of hatred standing between you, your children, your children’s children, and God the Father.
