Isaiah 30:21
And your ears will hear a word behind you, “This is the way, walk in it,” whenever you turn to the right or to the left.
It’s been a long time since I sat down to memorize Scripture. Life is so hectic, and with all I have to do in a single day, memorization is at the bottom of the list. It shouldn’t be though. Scripture is like a soldier’s arsenal of weapons. It’s the “two-edged sword” that we fight our spiritual battles with. And yet, so few of us actually make the memorization of it a priority.
Someone once asked me if I could recite one verse for every year that I’ve been alive. When I could respond in no other way but the negative, he asked me if I could at least quote a verse for every year I had been a Christian. It was at this point that I realized just how vulnerable I am to Satan’s attacks. My spiritual arsenal was greatly lacking!
What about yours? Do you have a well-rounded stock of Scripture committed to memory? It’s going to be somewhat difficult for the Holy Spirit to assist you in the midst of a trial if the only Bible verse you’ve memorized is John 3:16. As I said, Kristie and I recently memorized Philippians 4:6, “Be anxious for nothing, but in everything by prayer and supplication with thanksgiving, let your requests be made known to God.” With this verse now committed to memory, the Holy Spirit will remind me of it the next time I begin to worry… It will be much more effective than John 3:16. The best part about it is that it only took about ten minutes to memorize. So what are you waiting for?
Thanks for the devo, it really got to me!
The armor of God is an amazing thing to read about. To know that God equipped us with so much to guard ourselves is amazing. But every piece of armor is meant for standing your ground, or pressing foward. No piece is meant for you to run. I found out on our latest retreat where we studied the armor of God that my weakest piece is the sword. But at the same time it might be one of the more important for a disciple of Christ.
good devotion. memorizing scripture can be such a huge help to our walks. Thanks for the encouragement.
