Psalm 23:5
Thou dost prepare a table before me in the presence of my enemies; Thou hast anointed my head with oil; my cup overflows.
Do you spend more time addressing your “enemies” or your Lord? God has created you because He desires to have a meaningful relationship with you. Over the course of my life, I have found that Satan will do anything possible to hinder that relationship. This is Satan’s number one priority in a spiritual war against God’s children; he will use anything at his disposal to win that war.
Thou dost prepare a table before me in the presence of my enemies…
I find great security in this passage. To think about our Lord preparing a table for us in the midst of Satan’s attacks shows His total control of every situation. Table fellowship within scripture is possibly one of the most intimate expressions of love and communion. On several occasions, Jesus ate with the sinners and the tax collectors, not to fill His stomach, but to show His unconditional love for all people. All believers will be invited to a dinner party in heaven at the end of time. God is preparing a great banquet to welcome us home. The Lord’s desire is to know you more intimately. Satan’s goal is to interrupt that relationship by continually oppressing us with pain, hopelessness, and trials. It is important for us to never forget that our God is in total control. He will not run from our enemies. Even with them in our presence, He prepares a table for us. His desire to have a relationship with us will not be hindered by the enemy. Though the enemy may be all around us, we must continually feast our eyes upon the Lord.
Though hast anointed my head with oil…
Furthermore, we must remember that the Lord has prepared this feast for each one of us. If you were the only person on earth, the Lord would still have sent His only Son, Jesus Christ, to die for your sins. You are an important individual to our God. The anointing of someone’s head with oil is to show honor and respect. You are highly regarded as a guest of utmost importance to our Lord. Never forget that the Lord created you with “you” in mind. You were not simply created and then loved by the Lord. You were carefully and thoughtfully created. God designated every last detail, from your hair color to your personality. The Lord loves you.
My cup overflows.
Never doubt the goodness of the Lord. He not only provides security and intimacy in preparing a table for you, but He overwhelmingly blesses everyone that dines with Him. To all that call upon His name, He delights in overflowing our cups with His blessings. The Lord’s blessings are waiting for those that love Him.
I challenge you to spend less time wrestling with your sins and problems and more time dining with the Lord.
