Yes, Them! As Yourself.

July 28th, 2008

Matthew 7:12

Therefore, however you want people to treat you, so treat them, for this is the Law and the Prophets.

Love was the central theme of Jesus’ life here on earth. Everything from His willingness to take on human life, to the ultimate sacrifice of then giving that life up for you and me, was motivated by love. Love was the central theme of His miracles, and here at the conclusion of His “Sermon on the Mount,” we are reminded that love was the central them of His teaching. God is love. It’s His character, and He demands it of us who so proudly claim His name as our own.

Imagine what the world would look like if it was able to embrace this one teaching of Jesus. If the entire world were to love one’s neighbor as one’s self, it would turn evil on its head. All hatred, bitterness, and jealousy would be vanquished. Selfishness would find no friend. Imagine if God’s children could even do this. The lost would understand why we follow Christ. An unavoidable difference would be witnessed between those who know Christ and those who don’t. As it stands now, the “found” walk around as undisciplined and unloving as the “lost.” All this because the church has failed to embrace the central them of Christ’s life… selfless love.

Granted, as long as the world is without Christ, people will never be capable of treating others as they wish to be treated. What excuse does that give the church though?

What excuse does that give you?

Jesus’ command is simple. “However you want people to treat you, so treat them.” It’s not a suggestion though, it’s a command. How often do you make this your goal? It has to be a conscious decision. I pray it’s one that you make today.

How can you expect the church to ever love like Christ while you go through your day so pointlessly? How would you like to be treated today? Go and do likewise!

To Glenn, a dear fellow believer I've never met, but someday-perhaps not 'til Heaven-I'll get that privilege to meet, only one word: Amen.
