Matthew 7:7, 8
Ask, and it shall be given to you; seek, and you shall find; knock, and it shall be opened to you. For everyone who asks receives, and he who seeks finds, and to him who knocks it shall be opened.
Some of Jesus’ sayings sound too good to be true. “Everyone who asks receives? He who seeks… finds? To him who knocks it will be opened? What do you do when you knock but can’t find any open doors? Do you still believe?
You do if you understand that this passage isn’t about the one knocking, seeking, or asking, but about the one who does the giving. Once again, it’s extremely difficult for our selfish nature to approach this passage without looking at what it can do for us. The truth is it was meant to serve as a reminder to the great faithfulness of our heavenly Father.
Imagine the crowd questioning Jesus about His Father. “Why this?” “When that?” I can feel the depression in their hearts… the confusion. Then Jesus speaks to them the words mentioned above. Read them again, not focusing on the crowd [or you], but on the provider. Hear the verses the way they were meant to be heard. “Ask, and my Father will give it to you; Seek, and my Father will reveal it to you; Knock, and my Father will open it for you. For my Father has always given to everyone who asks, He has always revealed Himself to those who seek, and He will always open the door for those who knock.
You do knock, I know you do… but do you trust? The children of God have inherited a long history of God’s faithfulness. Take a moment today to think on His greatness. Remember the stories of the Old Testament, the provision of His apostles, and His faithfulness to you thus far. Keep knocking, but when you knock, believe it will be opened (James 1:5).
