Mark 3:11
And whenever the unclean spirits beheld Him, they would fall down before Him and cry out, saying, “You are the Son of God!”
You would probably have been put to shame by the respect these evil spirits gave to Christ that day. Although the highly religious Pharisees and several multitudes of sick and curious people were following Jesus, it was neither of these groups who recognized Him as the Son of God. Only Satan’s demons fell down to honor Jesus as the Christ.
This somewhat unexpected contrast serves to show us the magnitude of our own ignorance. The Pharisees did not know that they would be labeled as the “Pharisees” in New Testament history. Rather, they believed they were devout Jews defending their God from the false teachings of this man who claimed to be the Christ. Their arrogance in the knowledge of Scripture caused them to overlook the Son of God; even worse, they misunderstood Him for a servant of the Devil (3:22). Opposite the Pharisees, were the crowds that “pressed about Him in order to touch Him” (3:10). They had heard of His healings and longed to take advantage of His seemingly endless flow of miracles. Neither group understood the true personhood of Christ because their selfishness served as a blinding agent to the truth. In fact, the only ones who offered to Christ the respect He deserved were those who had a healthy fear of Him… it’s a shame that group turned out to be the unclean spirits.
Will you allow Satan’s demons to give the Lord more glory than you do today, or will you put down your selfish desires for long enough to recognize Jesus for who He is?
Ouch.
