Proverbs 3:5-6
in the Lord with all your heart and lean not on your own understanding; in all your ways acknowledge Him, and He will make your paths straight.
Bathing my two-year-old daughter has really opened my eyes to this verse. I’ve had this verse memorized since I was a child, but it is only now that I fully understand it. In fact, since becoming a parent I have really begun to understand God in a much deeper way.
Whenever I wash my daughter’s hair she looks down, because she is afraid of getting soap in her eyes. I tell her to tilt her head up while I rinse her hair, but it goes against her instinct or intellect. You would think that by looking up the soap would go right in your eyes, but in actuality it lets the soap roll down the back of your head. I get so frustrated that she doesn’t listen to me. She continues to look down and she continues to get soap in her eyes.
Through my frustration I realized that this is what we, as grown ups, do with God. God tells us to do certain things in His word and it is so contrary to our instincts and intellect that we don’t do them. However, God knows what is best for us just like, as a mother, I know what is best for my daughter. If only we would obey God the first time how much pain and heartache we could avoid.
