The Price of Perfection :: Deeper Devotion

The kingdom of heaven is like treasure hidden in a field. When a man found it, he hid it again, and then in his joy went and sold all he had and bought that field.
Again, the kingdom of heaven is like a merchant looking for fine pearls. When he found one of great value, he went away and sold everything he had and bought it.

Most of us strive for perfection in several aspects of our lives. It may be we are striving for the perfect family or job, to be the perfect athlete, student, or businessperson. Many times our terms of perfection are based upon worldly standards.

In these parables, we see men who have found perfection. So perfect are their findings they are willing to sell everything to obtain these things. Here is the message: perfection comes at a price, and our faith in Christ is the only place where we find true perfection.

There is a price for obtaining perfection. If a person is striving for perfection in their career, it can come at the expense of family. The expense for a perfect relationship with Christ comes at the expense of worldly desires; it means putting Christ first. It means loving God first, others second, ourselves third. It means having a heart that breaks when others hurt. The pursuit of a relationship with Christ means spending time in prayer, worship, scripture, and service to others.
