Song of Solomon 4:7
You are all fair, my love, and there is no spot in you.
How marvelous are these words! To think that Christ would say this about the church! We who were rebels against him, and would have rejected him forever had not he intervened on our behalf.
What does he mean by this? Firstly it says “There is no spot in you.” Christ died, and suffered the full amount of God’s wrath to pay for our sins. He removed the biggest ugliest stains from us, and went even further than that. A spot isn’t much, but Christ loved us so much that he erased even the littlest speck from our accounts, and now when God looks at us, he sees a PERFECT righteousness. Not a flaw…not even the tiniest thread is out of place. It is PERFECT. “You are all fair” Totally clean, totally perfect. It might be kind of difficult our puny faith to accept, but it is as true as any of the indesputable truth’s of the Bible.
“Christ Jesus has no quarrel with His spouse. She often wanders from Him, and grieves His Holy Spirit. Nevertheless, He does not allow her faults to affect His love. He sometimes chides, but it is always in the tenderest manner, with the kindest intentions–it is “my love” even then. He does not remember our follies; He does not cherish ill thoughts of us, but He pardons and loves after the offense as much as before it.
“This is a good thing, for if Jesus were as mindful of injuries as we are, how could He commune with is? Many times a believer will put himself out of communion with the Lord because of some slight change in his circumstances, but our precious Husband knows our silly hearts too well to take any offense at our bad manners.
“If He were as easily provoked as we are, who amound us could hope far an accepting look or a kind greeting from Him? But He is “ready to pardon…slow to anger” (Neh. 9:17). He is like Noah’s sons: He goes backward and throws a cloak over our nakedness (Gen. 9:23). Or we may compare Him to apelles, who, when he painted Alexander, put his finger over the scar on his cheek, so that it might not be seen in the picture. “He has not observed iniquity in Jacob, nor has He seen wickedness in Israel” (Num. 23:21), and so He is able to commune with the erring sons of men.”
What a blessing! Despite our sin, despite our filthy rags of righteousness, Christ still would stoop to commune with us. Praise the Lord!
