Never Forget

Exodus 20:1, 2
Then God spoke all these words, saying, “I am the Lord your God, who brought you out of the land of Egypt, out of the house of slavery.

Never forget where you came from or the One who delivered you! This is one of the greatest themes found throughout the Old Testament. Interestingly enough, most of the occurrences precede the giving of a command, or here, the Ten Commandments. Before instructing the Israelites on the Law of the Lord or His instruction, Moses continually reminded them of the great and mighty works God had already done for them. I find this to be of no coincidence, but rather very helpful– both to the Israelites and to us today.

The Lord was reminding His children just how greatly He loved them. He wanted them to know that just as He had delivered them from Egypt, and just as He had brought them out of slavery, now He would deliver them from repeatedly being cut off from their God. Those who embraced the Law of the Lord and considered it a blessing would find peace and hope in the presence of their Father; those who rejected the Law and counted it a curse would be cut off from their God. The Ten Commandments, along with all of God’s laws, are an outpouring of heavenly love from the Father to His children.

It is for this reason alone every believer should be dedicated to reading Scripture and studying the history of their faith. The greater our awareness of the Lord’s faithfulness in the past is, the greater our own faith will become concerning the future. I encourage you to create a journal dedicated to the promises of God and the ways He has blessed you or your family in the past after following His instruction. Record everything from a good grade on an exam to the addition of a newborn baby in the family. God loves those who faithfully embrace His commandments… for this is the reason they were given in the first place.

Start today though. Read Exodus 20:1-17 and ask the Lord to bring to remembrance the different ways following those commands has bettered your life and your relationship with Him. Record them in a notebook or on the computer. Thank Him for the love that He has shown you through the giving of His law.

For this is the love of God, that we keep His commandments. And His commandments are not burdensome (1 John 5:3).
