Proverbs 15:1
A gentle answer turns away wrath, but a harsh word stirs up anger.
How well have you been doing at controlling your anger lately? Has it been godly? Have you found that there is still room for improvement? Proverbs 15:1 will help us here. The first thing we learn is that, “A gentle answer turns away wrath.” Just because somebody is mean to you or does you wrong, that doesn’t give you the right to respond in anger. Your model for this is Jesus. Even while facing torture and death, Jesus never responded to false accusations or physical beatings with anger. His children of God, it is our duty to respond in a like matter. In doing so, your attacker’s wrath may cease and God is always glorified.
Second, we find that “A harsh word stirs up anger.” Aside for the fact that returning a harsh answer places you in sin, it is important that realize your harsh answer will only stir up more anger. This is far from godly in that you are condemning yourself before God and enabling your attacker to continue in their sin. As children of God, it is our duty to not only abstain from sin ourselves, but to help our brothers and sisters return to God when they have fallen into sin. Proverbs 15:1 teaches us that our treatment of others affects their relationship with God. “A gentle answer turns away wrath, but a harsh word stirs up anger.”
