Matthew 5:6
Blessed are those who hunger and thirst for righteousness, for they will be satisfied.
There exists within all of us a longing desire for eternal security (Ecclesiastes 3:11). The Bible consistently teaches that Jesus Christ and His righteousness is the only substance that will ever satisfy such an immense hunger or thirst (John 6:35). It is this truth that leads David to write, “As the deer pants for the water brooks, so my soul pants for thee, O God” (Psalm 42:1).
As a child of God, you have been promised this eternity. Not by your own merit, but by the grace of God, Christ has demonstrated the perfect life. His death on the cross has allowed us the privilege of an unearned righteousness (Philippians 3:9). We do not seek our own righteousness as a means to salvation because this unobtainable (Romans 3:23). Rather, we seek Christ’s righteousness because it is the only hunger and thirst that will ever be completely satisfied (Matthew 5:6).
Where do your unspoken goals lead you to worship on a daily basis? Is your hunger for financial security driving you to bow to the thrones of silver and gold? Does your thirst for acceptance lead you away cross of Christ? The Bible warns us that these worldly lusts are not from the Father and that they are quickly passing away (1 John 2:16-17). There is no satisfaction found in them. How different will your day look after reading Jesus’ words? I pray that your heart is not so hardened that they might fall on deaf ears. His words have the power to change life and to raise the dead.
