Gladly Carried by God :: Deeper Devotion

Isaiah 46:4
“Even to your old age I will be the same, and even to your graying years I will bear you!I have done it, and I will carry you; and I will bear you and I will deliver you.”

Contrasting Himself with idols that can not save, God tells us in Isaiah 46 that idols are a burden upon everyone and everything. They produce weariness and have as their end captivity. He, on the other hand is the Lord God who has carried His people before they were ever born (Isaiah 46:3).

A sense of overwhelming burden and excessive weariness, can serve as an indicator that we are worshipping something other than God. The Bible speaks of our lusts revealing that the wrath of God is upon us (see Romans 1). So, it is not that strange in Isaiah for weariness to be a symptom of idolatry. This is not always the case of course, but it often can be.

We can be “carried about by every wind of doctrine, by human cunning, by craftiness in deceitful schemes” (Ephesians 4:14). we can also be “carried away with the error of lawless people and lose … stability” (2 Peter 3:17), instead of allowing ourselves to trust the one who “has…carried our sorrows” (Isaiah 53:4).

God has promised to carry His people. Trusting Him is our glad duty. Abraham Piper says it well:
