Mark 9:24
Immediately the boy’s father exclaimed, “I do believe; help me overcome my unbelief!”
When things are going well in my life I focus less on God and more on me. Maybe it is because I arrogantly think that I am in control of the circumstances that are causing my life to go well. It is when I face struggles that I find myself relying more on God. In those moments of struggle I must come to the point where I turn it all over to Him and allow the God of Wonders to do His work in my life.
There are lots of things in the world around us that cause unbelief. Just turn on the television to any news station and watch for a few minutes and you may find yourself immediately wondering, “Where is God in the midst of all this world tragedy.” Wars, famine, violence, hurricanes, tsunamis; the list goes on and on.
Then, of course, we must each look at our own personal lives and wonder, “If I really believed as I should, would I be doing what it is that I am doing?” I can’t tell you the number of Christians I know who raise their hands in proclamation of the Risen Christ on Sunday mornings, only to find themselves making selfish, un-Christ like decisions the rest of the week.
What causes unbelief is the arrogance of self, thinking that we are in total control of our lives. What moves us away from this arrogance is to turn to God and say, in total submission, “Help me in my unbelief.” It is in that moment that we can truly experience a God who loves us and desires to guide us each day.
