Spared From His Anger :: Deeper Devotion

Spared From His Anger

October 5, 2008

Isaiah 12:1

Then you will say on that day, “I will give thanks to Thee, O Lord. For although You were angry with me, Your anger is turned away, and you do comfort me.”

Our Lord’s anger is no less awesome than the greatness of His love. It’s a shame that so many Christians have seemingly forgotten the enormous weight that was taken off of our shoulders when Christ died for our sins. Those who are alive in Christ have been delivered from the same righteous wrath that poured judgment on Sodom and Gomorrah, that cast Jonah into the mouth of a fish, and that turned King Nebuchadnezzar into a wild animal. We forget how great a privilege it is to have been spared the anger of God.

One would think that after being shown so much grace, we would never cease to offer praise to Him who redeemed us. Seldom do we bow our heads in thanks though. Seldom do we slow down to read our Bible or to pray that another may be shown the same grace. How selfish and ungrateful have we become? I pray that you would be overwhelmed with the magnitude of anger from which you’ve been delivered. I pray that the seriousness of your past condemnation would become a reoccurring thought for you.

It has been brought to my attention that good health, a full appetite, and a good night’s sleep would never be appreciated apart from sickness, hunger, and exhaustion. I pray that you would pause long enough today to remember the anger from which you’ve been spared. My hope is that by doing this, you will discover a greater appreciation for your redeemer… and a heart grateful for the comfort you have been provided.

I will give thanks to Thee, O Lord; for although You were angry with me, Your anger is turned away, and you do comfort me.
