Put It On

Colossians 3:14
Beyond all these things put on love, which is the perfect bond of unity.

There is a lady who I work with who makes proper names plural when they are supposed to be singular. For example, Best Buy to her is Best Buys and so on. At first, I thought this was funny, so I would poke and laugh. Then, it started to annoy me, and I would correct her, because after all, she is saying it wrong, right?

Well, there came the day when the correction went too far. She said something wrong and I gently (and I’m being honest about that) corrected her. With a hurtful look in her eyes, she said “Whatever!” and walked away. Oh no…what have I done? Why did I go there? Does it really matter that she says things a little wrong?

Of course it doesn’t. So, from there I remembered that I have to put on love. Sometimes that feels fake to me. After all, how can I love sincerely when my heart isn’t into it? That’s the thing…it’s better to be a little less than genuine in a moment of irritation, then let your emotions dictate what your tongue says and BAM! You’ve said something regretful and you’ve looked like an idiot….a Christ following idiot.

You’ve heard it a thousand times. Love is a choice. Choose it. God will honor that choice and start to change your heart so that maybe the next time you hear someone talk about Walmarts, you’ll think it’s cute instead of corny.
