Joshua 24:15
If it is disagreeable in your sight to serve the Lord, choose for yourselves today whom you will serve: whether the gods which your fathers served which were beyond the River, or the gods of the Amorites in whose land you are living; but as for me and my house, we will serve the Lord.”
I have been in many homes where there is a plaque of the latter part of the verse above.
“As for me and my house, we will serve the Lord.” What I have not seen is a plaque on the first part. “But if serving the Lord seems undesirable to you, then choose for yourselves this day whom you will serve, whether the gods your forefathers served beyond the River, or the gods of the Amorites, in whose land you are living” (Joshua 24:15). Is serving the Lord is undesirable to you????
That is harsh. But something that needs to be said. The line that has separated the Believer and the non believer has been blurred in this pluralistic society. Strong statements and strong faith need to be evident in our world, among our friends, and in our family.
Decide this day. What is it gonna be? You want that or this? We do it every day. We choose clothes, friends, churches, music, TV shows, movies, video games. We all choose what we like every day. By our words and actions we sometimes choose NOT to serve the Lord. We do it in a public way that shows the decision we have made.
Joshua is calling the people to true commitment to their God. The time for fence riding is over. There needs to be a definite break with old ways of thinking and old ways of doing things and an embrace of the newness that is our great God. The good thing is that we are not alone in our choice. We are not left alone to deal with fear, frustration, and problems. Jesus walks with us daily to give us strength to walk in holiness and righteousness.
Choose this day. Before you take another step decide. Right now is all you have. You may have made a bad choice yesterday. Tomorrow is not here, so it is not a problem. But right now…choose. Choose this day who you will serve. As for me and my house, we will serve the Lord.
