It’s Not About What I Can Do For God :: Deeper Devotion

It’s not about what I can do for God; it’s all about what God did for me. Worship isn’t about the songs we sing. In fact, may I venture to say that worship isn’t even singing?

I remember when we had a concert at my church recently, given by Geoff Bullock (former Hillsong Church worship leader). Geoff led us in some songs, most of them I’ve never heard before. Two of them were even originals, which he had written earlier that week. But I learned this lesson from him: it’s not about what I can do for God: it’s ALL about what God has done for me. What I find exciting, is not that I’m reaching out to God; it’s God reaching out to me… that’s the exciting part. Who is this person; broken, guilty, faulty, and lost, that someone such as God… would want to reach out to?

The fact that God, the Perfect Creator, Almighty God, would want to reach out to me, a nobody from nowhere, with no future and no hope. This is what our Christian life is about. Not about the singing, not about what I can do for God; but about what He has done for me. He reached out to me, even though I was not even worthy of His help. What does a perfect being such as God, want with someone as imperfect and unworthy as me?

You see, this is what life is about. No matter how much stuff I do for God, it isn’t going to get me into heaven. Stuff is good, but what comes out of the heart is more important.

When we sing to God, our words are meant to reflect what is in our hearts. Our singing is our response to God. Our worship is the rest of our lives. Our worship is not our singing, but how we allow Jesus to live through us; manifesting Himself in every part of our lives.

This is the heart of what worship really is. When you think of the word “Worship”, what is the first thing that comes into your mind? When Geoff Bullock asked us this, I remember what first came into my mind: singing, music, musicians, and band. This is not God’s picture of what worship really is. We shall worship in Spirit and in truth. We give God our spirit, and then we let His truth be worked out in our lives. We allow Jesus to become the center of everything we do. Jesus becomes the center of our life, and thus our very actions and words are guided by His example.

Life is not about what I can do for God. Life is about what God has done for me, and how I am allowing God to live out His truths through my life. The songs we sing are our response to God, but our worship is how we are allowing God to live His life through us. Our primary focus should be on God alone, and what He has done for us. Everything else flows from this one cause.
